Abstract
Games and sports constitute an integral component of holistic education by fostering physical fitness, cognitive growth, emotional well-being, social competence, and cultural identity among school children. For tribal communities, traditional games are not merely recreational activities but also represent indigenous knowledge systems that embody ecological wisdom, cultural values, cooperation, resilience, and community participation. In Telangana, tribal communities such as the Lambada, Gond, Koya, Kolam, Chenchu, Naikpod, Thoti, and Pardhan possess rich sporting traditions that have historically contributed to children's physical development and socialization. However, rapid modernization, technological dependence, urban influences, and changing educational priorities have resulted in the gradual decline of indigenous games within school environments. Simultaneously, tribal schools continue to face challenges related to inadequate sports infrastructure, limited access to trained physical education teachers, insufficient sports equipment, and restricted opportunities for participation in competitive sports.
This theoretical review examines the educational and health significance of games and sports in tribal schools of Telangana by synthesizing literature from physical education, educational psychology, indigenous knowledge systems, public health, and tribal education. Drawing upon Holistic Development Theory, Sociocultural Theory, Experiential Learning Theory, Positive Youth Development, and Self-Determination Theory, the paper discusses how participation in games and sports contributes to physical fitness, motor development, psychological resilience, social inclusion, leadership, teamwork, academic engagement, and cultural preservation among tribal school children. The review further analyses the relevance of India's National Education Policy (2020), the Indian Knowledge Systems initiative, and the Sustainable Development Goals in promoting indigenous games and inclusive physical education.
The paper argues that integrating traditional tribal games with modern physical education programmes can create culturally responsive, inclusive, and health-promoting learning environments. It recommends strengthening sports infrastructure, documenting indigenous games, developing culturally relevant physical education curricula, enhancing teacher preparation, and promoting community participation to improve educational outcomes and preserve tribal cultural heritage.
